Box Score September 24, 2016 – ATLANTA – Morehouse gave up two interception returns for touchdowns and surrendered an 80-yard punt return touchdown and fell to the Miles College Golden Bears, 31-7.
The first home loss for Morehouse since October of 2014 dropped the Maroon Tigers to 2-2 on the season. Miles, the reigning SIAC champion, improved to 2-1.
Both teams started slowly, combining for nine penalties for 45 yards. Miles got on the board first, with a 38-yard field goal by Nick Christiansen, with 1:44 remaining.
The Golden Bears scored early in the second quarter on an 11-yard pass from David Whipple to Jourdan Walker.
Late in the second quarter, Monqavious Johnson relieved Kivon Taylor who had started at quarterback. But on his first pass attempt Johnson was intercepted by Caleb Duncan, who returned it 25 yards for a touchdown.
Bricen Terry scored the lone Morehouse touchdown on a one-yard run with 40 seconds left in the first half. The score was set up by a 34-yard rush by Taylor to the three-yard line.
Miles scored a third touchdown when Devin Brown fielded an Alexis Gonzalez punt at the 20-yard line and raced and weaved his way through would-be tacklers.
The Golden Bears' final score was a 59-yard interception return for a touchdown. This one thrown by Taylor who had returned to the game following a Johnson fumble.
Morehouse amassed more total yards than Miles – 263-243 – but failed to put it into the end zone and was undone by the turnovers. The Maroon Tigers converted only 3 of 15 third down attempts.
Lance McGuffie continued his hot streak at wide receiver, catching five passes for 55 yards. He also attempted a pass on a fake, but the pass was well defended.
For the fourth straight game, David Smith led Morehouse in tackles. Smith collected eight tackles, a sack, two quarterback hurries and forced a fumble. Four and a half of Smith's tackles were for a loss of 23 yards.
Rashay March had six tackles and Austin Benton, Voris Bryant and JaQuan Simpkins each made five tackles. Keith Anderson and Antonio Johnson each had a sack.
Morehouse will make a short road trip to Panther Stadium, Saturday, to take on the Clark Atlanta Panthers, at 4 p.m.
