Box Score September 10, 2016 – ATLANTA – Lance McGuffie caught two Monqavious Johnson touchdown passes and the Maroon Tigers downed the Kentucky State Thorobreds, 14-3, in the home season opener.
Last week, it was twin brother Lake McGuffie who made the big catches, but this week, the other half of the twin receiving duo made the McGuffie household proud.
In his biggest game as a Maroon Tiger, the junior from McDonough, Ga. hauled in seven passes for 101 yards. His long catch of 67 yards put Morehouse ahead for good, early in the first quarter. His second catch, an 11-yarder in the second quarter, capped a five-play 95-yard drive.
The only Kentucky State score was a 28-yard field goal, by Bill Rose, early in the third quarter.
Johnson continued his hot play, following his game-winning touchdown with no time remaining, last week against Edward Waters. The junior from Decatur, Ga. Completed 18 of 25 passes for 267 yards, with one interception.
But it was the defense that won the day, holding the Thorobreds to only 176 yards of offense – less than half the Morehouse total of 377 yards. The Tiger defense broke up five passes and combined for three sacks, nine tackles for loss and two interceptions.
Cornerback Austin Benton and defensive back Jonathan Cummings intercepted passes and the Maroon Tigers forced three fumbles, recovering two of them. Benton tacked on six tackles and pass breakups.
Once again, linebacker David Smith led the tackling brigade. The sophomore from Newport News, Va. made nine stops, including a sack and two tackles-for-loss. Last week, he led the Tigers with eight tackles and a fumble recovery.
Keith Anderson, Voris Bryant and Rashay March added to the defensive surge, with seven tackles each. Bryant and linebacker Joshua Burton combined for a sack and four-yard loss and Antonio Johnson collected a solo sack.
