Maroon Tigers Lose Doubleheader to Paine

April 3, 2015 – COLUMBIA, SC – Needing to sweep both games to stay in the hunt for a tournament berth, Morehouse lost both halves of a doubleheader to the Benedict College Tigers, 5-0 and 11-9.

In Game 1:

The Maroon Tigers got only two hits and fell, 5-0, as Benedict pitcher R. Troiano (4-6) pitched a complete game shutout, striking out six and allowing no walks.

Morehouse starter Malik Zuberi faced six batters and lasted only a third of an inning. He departed after allowing three earned runs on a hit and four walks.

Anthony Dodd took over for Zuberi and pitched the final five-and-two-thirds innings. Dodd gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out five.

Centerfielder Darius Johnson and first baseman Christian Watts had the only two Morehouse hits, both singles.

Morehouse dropped to 10-16; Benedict improved to 16-14.

In Game 2:

The Morehouse bats came alive to score nine runs, but it wasn't enough, as Benedict rallied late and pulled out an 11-9 win.

Morehouse jumped out early and scored three unearned runs in the first, a single by Jared Maner, an RBI single by Xavier Floyd and a two RBI single by Christian Griffith.

The Tigers scored four more runs in the second inning, on a grand slam home run by Patrick Dickerson. In the inning, Jason Davis hit a double, Ryan Christian reached on an error and Derrick Lewis was walked intentionally to load the bases.

Dickerson made them pay, by hitting his first home run of the season and the first Morehouse grand slam in more than 12 years.

Morehouse tacked on two more runs in the fourth. Jason Davis hit his second double of the game, Ryan Christian forced him home with an error on the pitcher, and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Lewis.  

Paine, which had scored one run in each of the first three innings, posted four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, to pull the game out.
