In Sunday's doubleheader baseball games, Morehouse scored five runs in each game against Miles College.

In Game 1, the Tigers fell a run short. In Game 2, it was just enough runs, as Morehouse won in dramatic fashion. The Maroon Tigers staged a come-from-behind rally on a gutsy offensive play and pulled off two stellar defensive plays, to quell a Golden Bears' rally.

Miles scored first in Game I and never relinquished the lead. Trailing 6-2 going into the seventh, and final, inning, Morehouse rallied for three runs in the bottom of the frame and had a chance to tie, with a man on third, but Patrick Dickerson grounded out sharply to second base and the game was over.

Christian Griffith had the hot bat in the first game. The sophomore from Lithonia who missed much of last season with a back injury, was feeling no back pain today. Griffith hammered out three hit in four plate appearances, including two doubles and a triple. He drove in two runs and scored two.

In all, Morehouse collected 11 hits. Dickerson was the only other Tiger with more than one hit.

Jalen Logan-Givens, who took the loss, pitched five-and-two-thirds innnings and gave up 12 hits and five runs, three of them earned.

Starting his first game for Morehouse, Cole Gibson pitched six strong innings and got the win in game 2. Gibson, a freshman from Conyers, allowed six hits and four runs. He gave way to another freshman Jason Davis, who came on in relief in the seventh and closed out Morehouse's second win of the season.

Morehouse got on the board first in part two of Sunday's doubleheader. In the first inning, Ryan Christian walked. Darius Johnson sacrifice bunted him to second and Zachary Lowe drove him in with a single. Miles responded with three runs in the second inning. Morehouse got a run back in the bottom of the second, on doubles by Jared Maner and Trey Bartholomew.

Neither team scored in the third, fourth or fifth inning and the score remained 3-2.

The bottom of sixth inning began with walks to Patrick Dickerson and Jared Maner. Xavier Floyd moved the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Julian Stephens, who pinch hit for Bartholomew, walked, as did Mathew Reed, who pinch hit for Elijah Sudduth. Reed's walk drove in a run and tied the score at 3-3.

With the bases loaded and leadoff man Christian at the plate, coach Robert Mitchell rolled the dice with a suicide squeeze. As the pitch was being delivered, Maner dashed from third toward home plate, with the expectation that Christian would bunt the ball safely and Maner would score. Or if Christian missed the bunt, Maner would have committed suicide by being tagged out by the catcher. Christian stabbed at and missed the pitch, which was too low and outside. But the catcher bobbled the ball and missed the tag. The result was a steal of home plate and a 4-3 Morehouse lead.

On the next pitch, Christian grounded out to the shortstop, driving in Stephens for the insurance run.

In the seventh, Ernest Harris walked and stole second. Aaron Williams also walked. The next batter, Christopher Smith, singled to center, driving in Harris. Williams tried to advance to third, but center fielder Ryan Christian came up throwing and gunned him down with a perfect throw to third baseman Christian Griffith. Smith rounded too far past first base and Griffith tried to throw him out, but his toss got past first baseman Xavier Floyd and bounced away as Smith rounded second base and headed for third. Pitcher Jason Davis, who had replaced Gibson, hustled after the errant throw and fired it to Griffith who tagged out Smith, who had fallen on the base path.

The strange double play sparked a joyous celebration by the Maroon Tigers and their fans who enjoyed the 5-4 victory.
