Maroon Tigers Sweep Doubleheader, Execute Triple Play

February 23, 2014 -- ATLANTA – In the second game of a doubleheader sweep, the Maroon Tigers executed one of the rarest and most exciting plays in baseball – a triple play.

It was the most exciting game of the season and was a feat that the players will be talking about for years. Most of the players and fans had never seen a triple play, except on television.

After walking the leadoff batter and booting a grounder for an error, pitcher Jordan Tarver was off to a poor start in the top of the first inning.

The next batter hit a soft, low liner back to the mound that was about to drop. Jordan, darting off the mound, made a lunging shoestring grab for the first out. His quick action and catch surprised the baserunners headed for second and third.

Jordan wheeled and fired a rocket to Christian Griffith at first base. The runner from second was still frozen in the baseline, like a deer in headlights. Griffith quickly stepped on the bag and threw a strike to shortstop Elijah Sudduth at second base. Sudduth stretched for the throw, ahead of the diving baserunner and Morehouse players and fans celebrated the rare 1-3-6 triple play.

In addition to the memorable play, Morehouse went on to win the game, 8-5, with a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning that broke a 5-5 tie.

Ryan Christian had two hits and four runs batted in, including two runs in the sixth.

The Maroon Tigers won the first game of the doubleheader, 16-5, on a complete game by pitcher Patrick Dickerson.

Freshmen Zachery Lowe and Caleb Pyscher swung the big bats for Morehouse.

Lowe, a catcher, went 4 of 5 from the plate, drove in four runs and scored three times.

Pyscher, an outfielder, had five plate appearances, collecting three hits and driving in four runs.

Dickerson, who allowed three earned runs on five hits, helped himself at the plate, going 3 of 4 and driving in two runs.

Infielder Elijah Sudduth drove in two runs, with a hit and drew three walks.

Brandon Baird, Ryan Christian and Xzadrean Gladney each had a hit and an RBI, and scored three runs apiece.

Improving their record to 5-9, the Maroon Tigers have already won two more games than all of last season.
