September 14, 2013 – JACKSON, TN – Freshman quarterback Monqavious Johnson threw two fourth-quarter touchdown passes, but it was too little too late for the Maroon Tigers who fell 31-17 to the Lane College Dragons.

Filling in for starter Joshua Harris, Johnson led the Maroon Tigers on two long drives and completed both touchdown passes to Devon Mann, for 8 yards each.

The freshman signal caller from Decatur completed 8-of-13 passes and orchestrated scoring drives of 58 and 99 yards. He gained 28 of his 41 rushing yards on a scramble from the one yard line that got the Tigers out of a deep hole.

Johnson was elevated on the depth chart, to replace backup Jordan Tarver, who was injured in the 27-16 loss to Howard.

Harris was 6-of-18, for 61 yards, and was sacked three times. He rushed for 24 yard. Shelton Hamilton led the Tigers, on the ground, with 71 yards on 18 carries.

The Morehouse defense had no answer for Lane quarterback Chris Rini, who completed 25-of-31 passes for 270 yards and three touchdowns. Rine rushed for 71 yards on 13 carries. As a placekicker, Rini also kicked a 26-yard field goal and four extra points.

Morehouse fell to 0-2; Lane moved to 2-0.

Neither team got much going in the first half. Lane jumped out to a 3-0 lead, on Rini's 26-yard field goal.

The Tigers bounced back early in the second quarter, when Hector Solis hit a 34-yard field goal.

Lane's George Landrum scored on a 22-yard run, to put the Dragons up 10-3, the score at halftime.

Rini connected on touchdown passes to Gregory Moore for 41 yards and Landrum for 19 yards in the third and to Jamion Dunning for 5 yards in the fourth to complete the scoring.

The Maroon Tigers stopped two Lane drives on sacks by Joshua Burton and Clarence Christian, who combined for 12 tackles and 3.5 tackles-for-loss.

Two interceptions also halted Lane drives. Temitayo Agoro intercepted a Rini pass and returned it 9 yards. Serving double duty, Agoro punted 7 times, for a 39 yard average.

But the biggest play was made by freshman cornerback Joshua Anderson whose interception and 37-yard return gave the Maroon Tigers at first-and-10, at the Lane 5-yard line.

In what could have been the turning point in the game, Morehouse failed to score from the 5. Lane put up an impenetrable goal line stand and took over on downs.

Morehouse travels to the Windy City, Saturday, to play new SIAC member Central State University, in the Chicago Football Classic, at legendary Soldier Field.
