Box Score
November 2, 2013 – FORT VALLEY, GA – After a lethargic first half, the Maroon Tigers came to life in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 33-0 halftime deficit, and Morehouse fell to the Fort Valley State University Wildcats, 46-19.
The Wildcats converted four Morehouse turnovers into touchdowns and built the lopsided score. One of the turnovers was an 80-yard interception return for a touchdown by Ja'Bioas Glenn who picked off a Jordan Tarver pass.
Tarver came into the game in relief of starting quarterback Monqavious Johnson who left the game after an illegal "targeting" hit by a Wildcat defender, who was ejected.
Maroon Tigers gained only 73 yards in the first half, while giving up 201 yards. They bounced back in the second half, on the arm of Tarver who threw for 266 yards.
Lake McGuffie got the lion's share of the passing yards, hauling in 187 yards on eight catches.
McGuffie, a red-shirt freshman, etched his name into the Morehouse record books with the seventh best receiving yards for a single game.
Morehouse played without several key players who sat out due to injury or eligibility questions. Leading kick returner and running back Thomas Williams and leading receiver Devon Mann, were among the missing. So, too, were, five of the team's top 10 tacklers – Austin Clark, Richard Sanders, Thaddeus Shaw, Brian Thomas and Lance White.
Missing so many key players, the Morehouse defense had no answer for Wildcats' quarterback Malcolm Eady who completed 10-of-21 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 89 yards.
Clarence Christian and Christopher Hambie were the heart of the Morehouse defense, collecting 11 tackles each. Joshua Burton had nine tackles and shared the only Morehouse sack with Christian.
The Maroon Tigers have lost five straight games for the first time since 1998, when the team went 0-11. With one game remaining – at Kentucky State – Morehouse (2-7) could match last year's record, which was the first losing season since Rich Freeman became head coach.
The bad news is a lopsided loss, the good news is that a number of freshmen are getting valuable playing time and experience.
Freshman Douglas Wyche led the team in rushing yards with 66, on 17 carries, and freshman Malik Johnson gained 18 yards on four carries.
Despite the uneven score, Morehouse had more first downs (27-14), more total yards (419-350) and a five-minute possession advantage. The difference was the three lost fumbles deep in Maroon Tiger territory and four interceptions that halted drives.
Sean Moore caught six passes for 88 yards and a touchdown.
