Maroon Tigers Lose in Cleveland Classic

September 15, 2012 – CLEVELAND, OH – The Maroon Tigers surrendered 677 yards and seven touchdowns and lost to the Winston-Salem State University Rams, 55-21.

Playing in the second-annual Cleveland Classic, in Cleveland Browns Stadium, Morehouse had no answer for Division II's #5-team, which rolled to a 21-7 first-quarter lead and never seem threatened.

Running back David Carter was held to a season-low 39 yards rushing and a touchdown, on 15 carries.

Carter's seven-yard touchdown run was set up by the Morehouse defense's brightest moment – a fumble recovery and return for 82 yards.

In the first quarter, with their backs against their own goal line, Morehouse linebacker Brandon Houston jarred the ball loose from Ram's running back Brand McDonald, at the 12-yard line. Elijah Anderson scooped up the loose ball and raced to the WSSU six-yard line, giving Morehouse first-and-goal.

On a day with not many bright spots, quarterback Donnay Ragland was the Morehouse leading rusher, gaining 74 yards, on 10 carries. He completed 8-of-19 passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Ragland's longest touchdown was a 57-yard strike to Devon Mann, who caught the perfectly thrown pass over his shoulder as he streaked down the sideline past his defender.

Ragland's other touchdown pass was an 18-yard completion to a closely guarded Devance Harris, who made a leaping grab over the outstretched hands of his defender in the end zone.

Mann finished with two catches for 59 yards. Harris had three catches for 31 yards.

Houston and Lance White led Morehouse in tackles, with 11 apiece. They were followed closely by Justin Oliver, with 10, and Christopher Alston with nine. Clarence Christian, Raynard Ware and Latavius Watts each had six tackles.

Kick returner Thomas Williams had a big day returning kicks. “TJ” compiled 130 return yards, on two punts and three kickoffs.

This was Morehouse's largest margin of defeat since Fort Valley scored eight touchdowns and rolled to a 57-12 victory in 2004.

Morehouse will play its first home game of the season, Saturday, at 7 p.m., when the Lane College Dragons come to B.T. Harvey Stadium.
