Winning Touchdown

Morehouse Defeats Tuskegee

Quarterback Byron Ingram leaps over pile for winning touchdown
October 8, 2011 – COLUMBUS, GA – The Maroon Tigers served up a heavy dose of Vitamin D and clawed back from a 14-point deficit, to break a seven-game losing streak against Tuskegee, with a 17-14 win.

On a day when the Morehouse offense was slowed by the SIAC's best rushing defense, the Maroon Tiger defense took up the slack, holding Tuskegee to 181 total yards.

Led by Brandon Houston, with a game-high 11 tackles, the 'House D, recorded 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions.

Capitalizing on Morehouse mistakes and turnover, Tuskegee jumped out to a 14-0 lead, on the strength of two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Justin Nared, of 16 and 10 yards.

Morehouse bounced back in the second quarter, when David Carter took it up the middle for a 20-yard touchdown run.

Halftime score: 14-7 Tuskegee.

In the second half, Morehouse dialed up a heavy dose of the running game and pressure defense, to hold the Golden Tigers scoreless.

Brandon Hoffman booted a 20-yard field goal in the third quarter, to pull Morehouse within four points, 14-10.

Quarterback Byron Ingram scored the final Morehouse touchdown on a one-yard run with 7:20 left in the game.

Player before his hometown crowd, Latavius Watts, a Columbus native, halted the final Tuskegee drive with an interception. In the first quarter, Charlie Wilson picked off an interception that he returned 33 yards.

David Carter, who was awarded the Morehouse Player of the Game trophy, finished with 99 yards on 29 carries. It was the first time this season Carter has rushed for less than 100 yards.

The Gatorade shower that drenched coach Rich Freeman at game's end was as joyous and as it was symbolic. The dousing served to wash away the proverbial “monkey” that had clung to Freeman's back for 10 losses against Tuskegee – six as an assistant with other team's and four as Morehouse head coach.

The Maroon Tigers (5-1) will travel to Albany State, to face the Golden Rams, Saturday, at 7 p.m. Albany State lost at Lane, today, 26-24.
