January 20, 2011 – ATLANTA – Five Maroon Tigers scored in double-figures and Morehouse outlasted the Stillman College Tigers, 84-72. With two straight wins, Morehouse has improved to 3-6 (3-4 SIAC).
The rare, balanced-scoring feat allowed Morehouse to avenge a 68-57 loss, in November, to the SIAC's leading team.
The first half was a see-saw affair, with seven ties and 14 lead changes. With neither team able to take command, Morehouse squeezed out a 43-39 halftime lead.
Accurate shooting by both teams kept the score close, until just past the midway point of the second half, when junior transfer Adam Callaway stole the ball and streaked down court for an uncontested layup. After that play, the rout was on. The energized Maroon Tigers quickly built a 14-point lead and held on the rest of the way.
Playing in only his second game of the season, Shawn Allen led the Morehouse scoring barrage. Allen, a proven scorer and rebounder, played the first part of last year, but left the team to focus on academics. The sophomore from New Orleans hit 6-of-8 shots, for 15 points, and hauled in six rebounds. He also had four steals and two assists.
Hot off of a monster game on Tuesday (25 points, 15 rebounds), Roderick Williams had another big day, hitting 6-of-7 shots, for 14 points and grabbing six rebounds.
With his third consecutive double-digit game, Jelani Figures also had 14 points, to go with five rebounds and two steals.
After starting the season with two big games, Jonathan Tassin had cooled off in the scoring department for the next five games. But the junior transfer from Pontiac, MI, turned it around today, connecting on 5-of-10 shots, for 13 points and collecting a team-high nine rebounds.
In his fourth game as a Maroon Tiger, Marek Legorce-Ross got his first taste of double-digit scoring. The freshman from Los Angeles missed only one shot, hitting 3-of-4 from the field and 4-of-4 free throws. He also tied Callaway with five assists, to lead the team.
Three Stillman Tigers scored in double figures, led my LaJay Sears, with 20 points. Sears, along with Rakee Anderson, 19 points, and Lee Riley, 17 points, connected on 8-of-21 three-pointers and kept the visiting Tigers close, for most of the game. Stillman fell to 9-4 (8-3 SIAC).
In the third home this week, Morehouse will square off against the Tuskegee University Golden Tigers, the defending SIAC champions, Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
