Don Nelson

Nelson most recently served as the offensive coordinator at Cedar Grove High School, where he helped three players earn All-Region honors.

Prior to Cedar Grove, Nelson spent the 2024 season as the offensive line coach at Norfolk State University. During his time with the Spartans, he coached Vincent Byrd to All-MEAC honors and helped lead an offense that ranked second in the MEAC in rushing and first in sacks allowed.

Nelson also served as the offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Alabama State University. In 2023, he helped guide the Hornets to a 7-4 record, the program’s best finish since 2014. Under his leadership, offensive linemen Dominic Boyd, Arelious Dunn, and Robert Alston IV earned All-SWAC accolades. As a unit, Nelson’s offensive line allowed just 15 sacks during the 2023 season, tying for the best mark in the conference. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, he recruited the state of Texas, Southern California, and Kansas junior colleges.

Before joining Alabama State, Nelson spent four years at Morehouse College as the offensive line coach, recruiting coordinator, and run game coordinator. In his final season with the Maroon Tigers, Morehouse finished 4-2 in SIAC play, the program’s best conference record since 2011.

During the 2019 season, Nelson worked with the Jacksonville Jaguars through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, assisting with the offensive line and film breakdown.

Nelson served as the running backs coach at Midwestern State from 2016-18, where he recruited Central Texas and the College Station area. He also spent two seasons at Langston University as the running backs coach and assistant run game coordinator.

His previous coaching stops include Pasadena City College, where he coached running backs and slot receivers; Occidental College, where he coached running backs; and Tabor College, where he worked with the offensive line and tight ends.

Nelson graduated from Tabor College in 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in kinesiology.
