ATLANTA, GA | Morehouse dug out of an early five-run hole Friday and turned the opener of a pivotal SIAC weekend into a statement win, pounding out 19 hits and erupting for 13 runs over a four-inning stretch to beat Albany State 14-7 at Gresham Park.
For three innings, Albany State looked like the sharper club and carried the energy of a second-place team. But Morehouse never let the game get away. The Maroon Tigers chipped into the lead in the fourth, exploded in the fifth, then put the game out of reach in the sixth with wave after wave of quality at-bats. By the time Albany State tried to push back late, Morehouse had already seized the series opener with one of its better offensive performances of conference play.
Scoring Summary
Albany State struck first with a five-run second inning. Mylon Uribe drove in the first run with a single, then Luke Addison broke the inning open with a grand slam to left-center that gave the Golden Rams a 5-0 lead.
Morehouse started the comeback in the bottom of the fourth. Raymond Jenkins opened the pressure, Nicholas Pittman was hit by a pitch, and Caleb Harley delivered the big swing of the inning with a two-run single up the middle that scored both Jenkins and Pittman to cut the deficit to 5-2.
The Maroon Tigers took control in the fifth with a six-run burst. TJ Whiteman started the inning with a single, Tripp Braswell's hit to left-center brought home Whiteman on an outfield error, Nicholas Pittman added a sacrifice fly, Mariano McLean knocked in another run, and Robert Robinson Jr. capped the inning with a three-run homer to left that pushed Morehouse in front 8-5.
Morehouse kept rolling in the sixth. Whiteman singled again, Elijah James walked, Braswell singled, and Raymond Jenkins ripped a two-run double down the left-field line. Pittman followed with an RBI single, McLean added another RBI knock, and Myles Tucker drove in one more as the lead swelled to 13-5.
Albany State scratched across a run in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Arin Chevers, but Morehouse answered immediately in the bottom half when Elijah James scored on Pittman's RBI single. Albany State got a solo homer from Aiden Payne in the ninth, but the Maroon Tigers were already in control.
Key Moments
The biggest turning point was not just Morehouse's offense, but the way Cam Simmons settled in after the rough second inning. After allowing five runs early, Simmons steadied the game, posted scoreless third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings, and finished with 10 strikeouts in 6.1 innings to keep Albany State from building on its fast start.
The fifth inning was the avalanche. Morehouse turned a 5-2 deficit into an 8-5 lead in one frame, then followed it with five more runs in the sixth. Once the Maroon Tigers got traffic on the bases, Albany State could not stop the momentum. Morehouse went 13-for-28 with runners on base and consistently cashed in scoring chances.
Andwele Pittman also helped close the door. He came on in the seventh, got the Maroon Tigers out of further trouble after Albany State trimmed the lead, and finished the final 2.2 innings with just two hits allowed.
