Maroon Tigers Sweep Saturday Twinbill at Clark Atlanta

PEACHTREE CITY, GA | Morehouse picked up a big SIAC road sweep on Saturday, taking both games of a doubleheader from Clark Atlanta at Home Plate Field. The Maroon Tigers claimed the opener 13-8, then backed it up with a 9-3 win in the nightcap to improve to 18-15 overall and 14-10 in conference play. For a Morehouse club that entered the weekend sitting sixth in the league standings, it was the kind of complete day needed in a tight conference race.

Game 1 — Morehouse 13, Clark Atlanta 8

Morehouse came out swinging and put Clark Atlanta on its heels immediately. The Maroon Tigers scored four runs in the top of the first, added two more in the second, and appeared to be in firm control before the Panthers made their push. Even after Clark Atlanta erased the deficit in the sixth, Morehouse had one more answer and delivered the decisive blow late.

Scoring Summary

Morehouse came out aggressive and grabbed control early in the opener. The Maroon Tigers scored four runs in the first inning, with Elijah James delivering a two-run single to score Robert Robinson and Tripp Braswell. Myles Tucker later brought home a run on a groundout, and another run scored on a wild pitch as Morehouse quickly built a 4-0 lead. In the second, Braswell added an RBI single and the Maroon Tigers pushed the lead to 6-0.

Clark Atlanta chipped away and then made its biggest push in the sixth, erupting for seven runs to tie the game at 8-8 after Morehouse had built an 8-1 advantage. The Panthers used a home run and a string of run-scoring hits to erase the deficit and put pressure back on the Maroon Tigers.

But Morehouse answered like a veteran club. In the eighth inning, the Maroon Tigers scored five times to reclaim control. Tucker forced in a run with a walk, a Clark Atlanta error brought home two more, Alec Waller lifted a sacrifice fly, and Mariano McLean added an RBI single to cap the inning. That response turned a tie game into a comfortable lead, and Morehouse finished off the opener from there.

Key Moments

Morehouse's biggest response of the day came immediately after Clark Atlanta's seven-run sixth. Instead of letting the opener slip away, the Maroon Tigers punched right back with five runs in the eighth inning and regained complete control. That answer turned what had become a toss-up into a statement win.

Game 2 — Morehouse 9, Clark Atlanta 3

The nightcap had a steadier feel from the Morehouse side. The Maroon Tigers scored early again, kept traffic on the bases all game, and got a strong complete-game effort from Cameron Simmons to finish off the sweep. Clark Atlanta trimmed the margin to two in the middle innings, but Morehouse never let the Panthers fully climb back into it.

Scoring Summary

The second game followed a similar script early, with Morehouse striking first and never really letting the Panthers get comfortable. Robinson opened the game with a single, Braswell followed with a hit, and Pinckney delivered a two-run single to center to score both runners for a quick 2-0 lead. In the second, Pittman singled, moved up on a wild pitch and scored on Satchel Hamilton's sacrifice bunt to make it 3-1.

The Maroon Tigers added more separation in the third. Whiteman turned on a pitch and sent it down the right-field line for a solo homer, then Tucker doubled down the left-field line and James followed with an RBI double down the left-field line, in almost the same place, to push the margin to 5-1. Clark Atlanta chipped away with single runs in the fourth and fifth, trimming the deficit to 5-3, but Cam Simmons kept the damage limited and gave Morehouse room to answer late.

That answer came in the sixth, when Morehouse broke the game open for good. Kendal Sellers and Hamilton drew walks, Robinson followed with another free pass, and Braswell ripped an RBI single through the left side. Whiteman then worked a bases-loaded walk, and Tucker delivered a two-out ,run-scoring, infield single  single that turned into even more damage when a Clark Atlanta error on the same play allowed another run to score. By the end of the inning, the Maroon Tigers had built a 9-3 lead, and Simmons closed the door from there with a complete-game effort.

Key Moments

After Clark Atlanta cut the lead to 5-3, Morehouse answered with a four-run sixth that put the game away. Simmons also played a major role in the nightcap, going the distance and limiting the Panthers to four hits over seven innings. The combination of a timely late push and a steady finish on the mound kept the second game from turning tense.
