ATLANTA, GA | The Morehouse Maroon Tigers battled throughout a challenging three-game series against the Edward Waters Tigers this past weekend but ultimately came up short in all three matchups, as they closed out the home schedule with senior day and the inagural baseball Den of Honor. Despite several standout individual performances, including timely hitting from
Raymond Jenkins,
Nicholas Pittman, and
Darrien Chapman, Morehouse was unable to overcome a series of big innings from Edward Waters. The series featured flashes of promise for the Maroon Tigers, including multiple double plays, stolen bases, and a disciplined approach at the plate, but they could not string together enough momentum to secure a victory at home.
Game One: Edward Waters 6, Morehouse 4 (Fri.)
Morehouse Lose To Edward Waters
Morehouse could not keep pace with Edward Waters 6-4 on Friday.
Morehouse got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after
TJ Whiteman singled down the right field line,
Raymond Jenkins tripled down the right field line, and
James Thorpe grounded into a fielder's choice, each scoring one run.
Edward Waters flipped the game on its head in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs on two hits to take the lead, 6-3. The biggest blow in the inning was a grand slam to right field.
Julian Goodman took the loss for Morehouse. The right-handed pitcher went five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on four hits, striking out three and walking five. Luis Valero earned the save.
Jenkins led Morehouse with two hits in five at bats. Whiteman, Jenkins, Thorpe, and
Elijah Pinckney each drove in one run for Morehouse. Morehouse had patience at the plate, amassing seven walks for the game. Whiteman, Thorpe, and Pinckney led the team with two free passes each. Morehouse ran wild on the base paths, collecting three stolen bases for the game. Morehouse turned one double play in the game. Morehouse were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Lee Hodges had the most chances in the field with 11.
Game Two: Edward Waters 12, Morehouse 5 (Sat.)
Morehouse Fall After Strong Showing By Edward Waters
Morehouse couldn't keep up with Edward Waters and fell 12-5 on Saturday.
Edward Waters got on the board in the top of the first inning after a single, scoring one run, and a double, scoring two runs.
Edward Waters added one run in the second on a RBI single to center field, making the score 4-0.
Edward Waters added one run in the third via a walk, making the score 5-0.
Nicholas Pittman homered to center field, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth for the Morehouse.
Noah Grayson took the loss for Morehouse. The starter went four innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits, striking out one and walking four.
Pittman led Morehouse with three runs batted in from the number eight spot in the lineup. The right-handed hitter went 1-for-3 on the day.
James Thorpe and
Elijah James each collected two hits for Morehouse.
Elijah Pinckney paced Morehouse with two walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, collecting seven walks for the game. Pinckney stole two bases. Morehouse turned three double plays in the game.
Game Three: Edward Waters 8, Morehouse 3 (Sat.)
Morehouse Lose To Edward Waters
Morehouse lost to Edward Waters 8-3 on Saturday.
Edward Waters jumped out to the lead in the top of the first inning after a single, scoring one run,and a double, scoring two runs. Another single added a run, and then a pair of doubles, scored one run each.
Morehouse scored one run in the bottom of the seventh on a solo home run to left field by
Darrien Chapman.
Quenton Mitchell Jr pitched six innings in relief for Morehouse. The right-handed pitcher gave up four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out four and walking none.
Jamie Lawrence III took the loss for Morehouse. The pitcher went one inning, giving up six runs on five hits, striking out none and walking two.
TJ Whiteman and
Elijah Pinckney each collected two hits for Morehouse. Chapman, Pinckney, and Lee Hodges each drove in one run for Morehouse. Morehouse turned two double plays in the game.
Looking Ahead
With the series loss to Edward Waters now behind them, the Maroon Tigers will look to regroup and finish the regular season on a high note as they prepare to travel to Savannah State next weekend. The series will not only mark the conclusion of SIAC regular-season play but will also determine if Morehouse will get into the SIAC conference tournament.
