Maroon Tigers Split High-Hitting Doubleheader With Paine

ATLANTA, GA | Runs were plentiful during a mid-week doubleheader between the Morehouse Maroon Tigers and the Paine Lions, at Gresham Field, on Wednesday.  The two teams combined for 50 runs and 47 hits.  Morehouse gained a split of the two contests.

GAME ONE:  MOREHOUSE 13, PAINE 12

Walk-Off Seals The Deal In Maroon Tigers Victory Over Paine College

Morehouse took Wednesday's game in dramatic fashion, with a 13-12 walk-off victory over Paine College. The Maroon Tigers were down 12-11 in the bottom of the seventh inning when Darrien Chapman homered to left field, scoring two runs. Chapman homered in the fifth and seventh innings. Chapman hit two home runs in the victory.

Morehouse got on the board in the bottom of the first inning after Chapman singled, and TJ Whiteman hit a sacrifice fly, each scoring one run. Morehouse extended their early lead with two runs in the bottom of the third thanks to RBI doubles by Whiteman and Nicholas Pittman.

Paine College flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring 10 runs on five hits to take the lead, 10-4. 

Morehouse scored six runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. James Thorpe hit a solo home run to center field, Pittman doubled, scoring one run, Raymond Jenkins grounded out, scoring one run, and Chapman homered to left field, scoring three runs.

A single by a Lion gave Paine College the lead, 12-11, in the top of the sixth.

Roman Stamps earned the win for Morehouse. The hurler allowed two hits and zero runs over one inning, striking out two and walking one. Quenton Mitchell Jr led things off on the bump for Morehouse. The right-handed pitcher gave up one hit and zero runs over three innings, striking out none and walking none. Amir Faulkner pitched two innings of no-run ball for Morehouse in relief. The lefty gave up zero hits, striking out one and walking four.

Morehouse collected 13 hits in the game. Robert Robinson, Pittman, and Thorpe each collected multiple hits for Morehouse. Elijah Pinckney paced Morehouse with three walks. Overall, the team had patience at the plate, accumulating nine walks for the game. Jenkins stole two bases. Morehouse ran wild on the base paths, amassing five stolen bases for the game. Morehouse turned three double plays in the game.

GAME TWO:  PAINE 16, MOREHOUSE 9

Despite Multiple Home Runs From James Thorpe, Maroon Tigers Defeated By Paine College

James Thorpe hit two home runs and drove in four, but Morehouse lost to Paine College 16-9 on Wednesday. Thorpe homered in the seventh and fifth innings. Morehouse collected 11 hits and Paine College had 13 in the high-scoring affair.

Paine College jumped out to the lead in the top of the second inning after a solo home run to left field, followed by a single, scoring one run, and another homer, to center field, scoring two runs. Paine College scored seven runs on four hits in the top of the third inning. A Lion tripled, scoring one run, followed by a walk, scoring one run. A grand slam to left field, and another walk added a run.

The Maroon Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to right field by Satchel Hamilton.

Morehouse made the score 12-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning when TJ Whiteman homered to center field, scoring two runs, and Thorpe hit a solo home run to center field.

A two-run home run to right field, in the top of the sixth, added additional runs for Paine College.

Morehouse scored five runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. Thorpe homered to center field, scoring three runs, and Vernon Clay homered to center field, scoring two runs.

Cameron Solomon took the loss for the Morehouse Maroon Tigers. The hurler went two innings, giving up four runs on four hits, striking out one and walking none.

The Maroon Tigers tallied 11 hits in the game. Whiteman and Clay each collected multiple hits for Morehouse. The Maroon Tigers were sure-handed in the field and didn't commit a single error. Robert Robinson had the most chances in the field with 10.
