Late Clock Control Secures Morehouse Victory Over Savannah State

ATLANTA, GA | The Morehouse College Maroon Tigers played against the Savannah State Tigers at Forbes Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The Maroon Tigers held their lead during the first half of play, up by 10 points at the end of that half. Savannah State attempted to gain the lead toward the end of the second half. However, they were unsuccessful in their comeback attempt following Morehouse's wise decision to run the clock down every possession, ensuring there wasn't any time left for the Savannah State Tigers to attempt a late-game comeback. At the conclusion of play, Morehouse College beat Savannah State in their second meeting this season, 65-59.

The Maroon Tigers' top contributors were Cedric Taylor III, who finished the game with 19 points, six rebounds, and two assists on 55.6% shooting, making 88.9% of his free throws. Amahn Decker contributed to this win with a double-double, scoring 11 points on 44.4% shooting and grabbing 10 rebounds. Another contributor was Dondre Watson, who ended the game with a double-double of 10 points on 57.1% shooting and caught 10 rebounds. The entire team finished the game offensively with 44.2% shooting, 22.2% three-point shooting, an overall free throw percentage of 60%, 35 rebounds, and 15 turnovers.

During this half, Watson would throw down a thunderous dunk with 10:14 left, getting his team within a point of the Savannah State Tigers lead, 18-17. JerMontae Hill would also contribute a dunk in transition following his steal from Savannah's Javonte Lundy, extending their lead, 26-22, beginning Morehouse's offensive run. At the beginning of the first half, it looked as though this match-up may be more of an even exchange of buckets from both teams, but Morehouse quickly began to take the reins, and with 0:18 left in the half, they were able to obtain their biggest lead, of 12 points. At the conclusion of this half, the Maroon Tigers finished with a 10-point lead, 37-27.

During the second half of the game, Morehouse would remain in the lead but would turnover the ball eight times in this half, aiding the Savannah Tiger's late-game comeback attempt. Despite those mistakes, they kept the lead by prioritizing managing the shot clock and game clock, ensuring there would not be enough time for Savannah State to succeed in their late-game comeback attempt. At the end of the half, the Maroon Tigers would go on to beat the Savannah State Tigers at home, 65-59.

The Maroon Tigers will compete Thursday against Allen University at Forbes Arena in Atlanta, Georgia, hoping to continue their two-game win streak. Play begins at 7:00 PM.
