Morehouse Maroon Tigers Crowned Champions at Inaugural SIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships

LOUISVILLE, KY | The Morehouse Maroon Tigers delivered a dominant performance at the inaugural SIAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, held February 20-21, 2025, at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. With a combination of individual excellence and relay dominance, Morehouse secured the team championship, finishing first with 186.7 points, well ahead of Benedict (115.2 points) and Tuskegee (91 points).

Sprint & Hurdle Highlights

Sophomore Michael Simmons Jr. was one of the standout athletes of the meet, claiming a silver medal in the 200m (21.39 PR) and bronze in the 400m (48.65 PR). His times ranked him among the top Division II sprinters in 2025. Sidney Morris shined in the 400m, capturing the gold medal (48.36 PR) and clocking one of the fastest times in DII this season. Jalen Smith (49.32 PR, 4th place) and Evan Alphonse (22.07 PR, 4th place in 200m) also contributed valuable team points. In the 60m hurdles, Brogan Korta (8.66 PR, 6th place) added a solid performance to Morehouse's overall team success.

Distance & Mid-Distance Dominance

The Maroon Tigers put on a distance clinic, led by Owynn Brown, who won the 800m (1:56.20 SB), while Dennis Kipruto (1:58.89 PR, 4th place) also earned All-Conference honors.
In the mile run, Morehouse swept the podium:

Gold – Brian Kemei (4:27.75 PR)
Silver – Owynn Brown (4:28.74 PR)
Bronze – Dennis Kipruto (4:30.99 PR)
5th place – Taylor Battle (4:34.98 PR, All-Conference performer)

Kemei continued his winning ways in the 3000m (8:56.04 PR, 1st place), with Issiah Simms finishing second (9:39.36, silver medalist). In the 5000m, Kemei once again took gold (16:44.01), while Phoenix Satterfield (17:17.69 PR, 4th place) and Hillary Kipkogei (17:34.96 SB, 5th place) added to Morehouse's distance dominance.

Field Event Success

Pole Vault: Brogan Korta captured bronze (3.80m PR).
High Jump: Julius Washington secured third place (1.82m).
Long Jump: Logan Jones took third place (5.98m).
Shot Put: Camren Clayborn (13.89m PR, 6th place) and Jordan Turner (13.70m PR, 7th place) contributed solid marks.

Relay Domination

The 4x400m relay team of S. Morris, J. Smith, J. Alibey, and M. Simmons Jr. won gold with a time of 3:14.27, a performance that ranks #27 in NCAA Division II. The Distance Medley Relay team (T. Battle, B. Korta, J. Alibey, O. Brown) also secured first place (10:45.82), ranking #92 in NCAA Division II.

Looking Ahead

With multiple gold, silver, and bronze medalists, along with 14 All-Conference performers, the Morehouse Maroon Tigers have established themselves as the dominant force in SIAC indoor track & field. Their championship victory sets the stage for an exciting outdoor track season, but first, the Maroon Tigers will prepare for national qualifications and continued success.
