New head football coach Terance Mathis was hoping to earn his first win as head coach of the Maroon Tigers and put an end to an ignominious streak that his staff inherited.
But after a fast start and some good opportunities to take the lead, the Maroon Tigers could not find their way into the win column on Saturday afternoon at B.T. Harvey Stadium. Johnson C. Smith scored right before halftime to take the lead for good and an avalanche of miscues sent Morehouse (0-2) to a 37-13 defeat, its 15th straight loss in the month of September.
The Golden Bulls (2-0) are formidable opponent without the additional help that came from three interceptions - one that was returned for a touchdown - a defense that allowed 6.5 yards per play, and a staggering 14 penalties for 114 yards. Still, Morehouse had its chances, especially in the opening half.
Morehouse recovered a fumble on JCSU's opening possession and had the ball at the Golden Bulls 32-yard line. But three plays later, a Patrick Blake interception gave the ball right back and snuffed out a potential scoring opportunity.
JCSU would take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter but on the Maroon Tigers' next play from scrimmage, Blake connected with
Ajani Williams, who broke free from a tackle and raced to the end zone for a 75-yard touchdown that tied the game. Morehouse's next drive started at the JCSU 40 but it stalled and ultimately, Brevin Caldwell would catch his second touchdown of the half in the back of the end zone with 2:02 left in the second quarter to give the Golden Bulls a 14-7 advantage it would take into the break.
Blake (8-of-16, 131 yards) would throw an interception at the end of the first half that was nearly returned for a touchdown but was nullified by penalty. He was not as fortunate on the opening drive of the third quarter. Shamar Baker's 38-yard pick-six increased the lead before Darius Ocean and Caldwell linked again for a third touchdown that put Morehouse in serious trouble.
Mathis tried to change the team's fortunes by changing the quarterback, inserting
Miles Scott (9-of-14, 83 yards) midway through the third quarter. While he was able to get the Maroon Tigers in the end zone in the fourth quarter on a 43-yard scoring pass to Williams (seven catches, 157 yards), it was not nearly enough to get the season's first victory.
Caleb Grant and
Tyrese Stanley each had six tackles while
Sean Johnson (five tackles, two sacks) and
Stephen Singleton (four tackles, sack, forced fumble) were among the defensive leaders for Morehouse, which plays next week against Howard in the HBCU NY Classic at Met Life Stadium in New Jersey. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
