Morehouse’s Defense Shines Despite Loss

Atlanta, GA | Back on their beloved home field, B.T Harvey Stadium, Morehouse's Maroon Tigers, led by Miles Scott, were unable to secure a win against the Benedict Tigers, losing 20-5, after having to rotate between two other quarterbacks following Scott's injury in the first half. Despite losing this game, Morehouse's defense shined against Benedict's Charles Simmons' offensive play.

The first quarter began with the Benedict Tigers winning the coin toss and deferred to Morehouse to begin the game by receiving the football. Following the touchback, the Maroon Tigers make an unsuccessful rush attempt toward Benedict's defense. Scott tried to regroup and threw two incomplete passes to Carl Allen II and Karmin Brunson. They ended this possession with a 25-yard punt kick by Khasen Kirkland.

Once Benedict gained possession of the football, the Maroon Tigers' defense quickly showcased their presence, with Carlos Dunovant forcing an incomplete pass from the offense. With the pressure that the defense was putting on Benedict's offense, the Benedict Tigers decided to punt the football and relinquished their possession of the football.

Morehouse's offense became rather inconsistent, but Scott began to make smarter plays by throwing short passes to get closer to the end zone. While gaining a consistent rhythm, Scott is roughly tackled by one of Benedict's defensive linemen, resulting in a roughing of the passer penalty being granted to Benedict. This play would go on to limit the amount of playing time Scott would have for the rest of the game, adding to the offensive struggles Morehouse was already facing. At 6:05, Morehouse's 32-yard field goal attempt kicked by Seve Spruill is successful, giving them the lead, 3-0.

The defensive prowess of the Maroon Tigers pressured Benedict's offense to run the football rather than pass the football. Both passing attempts from the offense's quarterback during these two plays were incomplete due to Morehouse's defensive pressure and Dunovant's play-breaking positioning. Benedict scores a rushing touchdown and extra point, taking the game lead, 7-3.  Neither team would go on to score again during this first half of play. During this first half, defensive linemen Caleb Grant and Sean Johnson would lead the defense with Grant's four tackles, a sack, and Johnson's five total tackles.

At the start of the second half of play, Morehouse's defense quickly made sure to make necessary stops to prevent the Benedict Tigers from scoring, allowing their offense to regain possession of the football. Patrick Blake would get the second half start in place of the injured Scott.  In the fourth quarter, Coach Terance Mathis would place Khamar Carlisle in at quarterback.  Carlisle would make several pass attempts but unfortunately was unable to convert and was sacked, resulting in a loss of 10-yards for the Morehouse and a forced fumble recovered by Logan Favors. At 9:37, the Maroon Tiger's defense received two safety points after forcing the Benedict Tiger's offense to lose five yards, 7-5.

The defensive plays run by Morehouse remained consistent throughout the game, but Benedict's offense overcame the pressure of Morehouse's defense. The Benedict Tigers would win the game 21-5, scoring the game-ending touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter of play. Morhouse's defensive leaders were Caleb Grant, Sean Johnson, and Derrick Bing. Johnson and Grant would end the game with nine total tackles. Grant also has two sacks. Bing ended the game with a total of five tackles.

The Maroon Tigers will go on to compete next Saturday in the annual Morehouse-Tuskegee Football Classic in Columbus, Georgia, at A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium. Play begins at 2:00 PM and will be available to stream on ESPN+. For up-to-date athletic information on the Maroon Tigers, follow them on social media or online at www.morehouseathletics.com
