LAKELAND, FL | Morehouse College's basketball team faced Florida Southern College in the Century Retail Thanksgiving Classic on November 30, 2024, at Jenkins Field House in Lakeland, FL. Despite a spirited effort, Morehouse fell to Florida Southern with a final score of 77-63.
The game highlighted Morehouse's determination, especially on the boards, where they collected 50 total rebounds, with Cedric Taylor III recording an impressive double-double with 16 rebounds and 13 points. Omar Rowe led the scoring for Morehouse with 18 points, including four three-pointers, while Matthew Coffey contributed 10 points and six rebounds.
Morehouse played a good defensive game, holding the Mocassins to 38.2% shooting from the field. Florida Southern's defense was also crucial, recording 14 steals, leading to 21 points. THe Mocs also had nine blocks to disrupt Maroon TIger offense.
The first half saw Florida Southern take a 39-28 lead, leveraging fast-break opportunities and dominant paint play. Morehouse tightened its defense in the second half, but the deficit proved too large to overcome. Although Morehouse reduced the margin to single digits on several occasions, Florida Southern's consistent scoring maintained their advantage.
The Maroon Tigers demonstrated resilience, with notable performances across the team, but turnovers (18) and shooting struggles (29.9% from the field) hindered their ability to close the gap.
The loss leaves Morehouse at 2-5 for the season. Morehouse returns to McAfee Court at Forbes Arena on Saturday, December 14. The time for the game will be announce later during the week.
