Morehouse's Historic Season Comes To An End

Rock Hill, SC- The Maroon Tigers fall to Savannah State 60-59 in the SIAC tournament semifinals. The Maroon Tigers would jump out to a 15-3 lead in the game's opening five minutes. However, Savannah State would counter their early lead with a 10-0 run of themselves and would ultimately maintain their momentum through the first half. The Tigers would also capitalize off the short whistle making 70 percent of their free throws in the first half.

Savannah State guard Marcus Scott would catch fire from the three-point line in making four of his five attempts in the first half. He would finish with 17 points and two assists in the evening. The Maroon Tigers' usually solid three-point shooting team went 1-10 from three, and free throw shooting made up the back end of their points in the first half.

The Maroon Tigers would also make a run towards the end of the first half, emphasizing defense, which would allow them to trail by three in the first half. As the two teams would battle for the lead for the first part of the second half, Savannah State would eventually lead by nine with 10 minutes to play, and the Maroon Tigers had to rely on their defense amid their shooting woes. By the nine-minute mark, the Maroon Tigers would walk that lead down with Morehouse guard Billy Adams hitting a three, knotting the game up at 50.

The Maroon Tigers would battle hard on the defensive end to keep the game close as the largest lead in the closing minutes, would only be one or two points. The Tigers would have the momentum in the final five minutes until Savannah State guard Avery Joyner was injured. The Maroon Tigers would benefit from the stoppage in play, but it would ultimately come down to free throws in the end, and the Maroon Tigers could not capitalize.

Shooting 65.7 percent from the free-throw line, the Maroon Tigers would still have a chance with 2.7 seconds in the game. Coming out of the timeout, Morehouse guard Noah Morgan would get a good look from three, but it didn't go in. Morgan would finish with 13 points, two assists, and one steal.

It's to be determined if the Maroon Tigers will play in the NCAA tournament; nonetheless, the Maroon Tigers had a historic season tying the school record with 18 straight wins under first-year head coach Douglas Whittler.
