Morehouse Earns No. 1 Seed, Set To Play 7:00pm Wednesday

Atlanta, GA - The Morehouse College Maroon Tigers, currently the East Division Champions, will kick off their SIACchampionship run as the number one seed on Wednesday against Spring Hill College.

In their last matchup against Spring Hill earlier in the season, the Maroon Tigers would take the win 86-70 and was the first win of their 17-game winning streak, which is the second-most by any Morehouse Basketball team and are on the cusp of tying the 2018 team with another win tomorrow. In his first tenure as interim head coach, Douglas Whittler '11 endured the growing pains in the first half of the season, but in mid-December, his team wouldn't lose another game in the regular season.

In supporting how interim head coach Whittler has turned around the season, fans and supporters alike chant, "In Whit We Trust." The players even wore the saying on a shirt in pregame warmups in support, backing the fan's support. Before he was head coach of the 20-6 Maroon Tigers, he was an assistant to the late head coach Grady Brewer '80.

Coach Brewer's son Xavier Brewer, a senior on the team, had this to say.

"I'm feeling confident in our team and the work we've put in. We know what the stakes are as it pertains to the program's future, and we also know it's deeper than basketball for us. This championship run we're expecting to go on is all dedicated to my late father, Coach Brewer."

These sentiments reign true for the entire team and program. Morehouse guards and twins Elijah and Andrew Stewart collectively feel prepared in their second tournament run (first with Clark Atlanta University).

"We are ready and have been waiting to play. We've already played in the tournament here before as freshmen at Clark Atlanta, so it seems like we're almost veterans right now. We are excited and ready to win everything for Coach Brewer".

The last time the Maroon Tigers were in the SIAC tournament, they lost in the semifinals in the 2019-2020 season. Although the previous year's SIAC Tournament was canceled due to Covid-19, defensive anchor Christian Lamar believes his team will bring the title home.

"I feel really confident. God got us this far. If we make sure we take every game one step at a time, we are bringing something special back to Atlanta!"

That is what the Maroon Tigers will have to do to secure the 2022 SIAC tournament championship and this brotherhood is very capable of completing that feat. It starts with Spring Hill College at 7 p.m.
