Strong Second Half Leads Morehouse To Victory Over Savannah State

ATLANTA, GA – The Morehouse College men's basketball team used a strong second-half effort to defeat Savannah State University, 67-62, on Monday evening in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Maroon Tigers improve to 10-9, 7-5 SIAC, while the Tigers fall to 5-10, 5-7 SIAC.

SSU controlled the pace for most of the first-half leading by as many as seven points at 24-17 with 5:20 remaining before the intermission. MHC mounted a comeback and went into the locker rooms down 35-34 after sophomore transfer, Jordan Sterling (Lithonia, GA ) hit two big three-pointers including one at the buzzer putting Morehouse within one point.

The Maroon Tiger defensive pressure and timely shooting helped the team pull away in the final moments as sophomore forward Xavier Brewer (Atlanta, GA) scored all Morehouse's 11 points in final 2:50 to lead his team to a 67-62 win.
 
Turning Point
With the score tied at 62-62, Brewer put the Maroon Tigers up for good with a three-pointer from the right corner with just :31 remaining, giving Morehouse a 65-62 lead.

Individual Leaders
Brewer had a team-high 18 points while pulling down eight rebounds while senior guard Michael Olmer (Atlanta, GA) and Kairo Whitfield (Atlanta, GA) each finish with 14 points. Sterling came off the bench, scoring a season-high eight points in the win. 

The Tigers were led by Marcus Scott who had a game-high 20 points while Adrian Bonds chipped in with 19 points.

> Savannah State was 41.5 percent from the floor connecting on 22-of-53 shots
> The Maroon Tigers snatched 35 rebounds with 12 coming on the offensive end
> The Tigers pulled down 31 rebounds, 11 of them being offensive
> MHC had 20 points off of turnovers to SSU's 15
> PC bench scoring had a 15-12 advantage

The Maroon Tigers return to action this Saturday, February 8th as they travel to Savannah, Ga. to take on Savannah State University. Tip Off is set for 3 p.m.
