FAIRFIELD, AL - Riding high off of a win versus Edward Waters, Morehouse fell in a non-conference battle to SIAC rival Miles College, 45-21, in the Prince Hall Americanism Football Classic in Fairfield, Alabama.
The Maroon Tigers fall to (1-2, 0-0 SIAC) while the Golden Bears start the 2019 season (2-0, 0-0 SIAC).
Miles College's offense got off to a quick start. Golden Bears quarterback Daniel Smith threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to receiver LaAnthony Robinson to take a 7-0 lead on their first possession. MC got the ball right back on Morehouse's 16-yard line after the Maroon Tigers return team failed to recover the ball on the ensuing kickoff. Smith punched in a 3-yard rushing touchdown to increase the lead to 14-0.
MHC's special team's unit continued to struggle in the first quarter when Miles College kicker Brady Hammel kicked a 14-yard onside kick and the Golden Bears recovered the ball at their own 49-yard line. On the next drive, Morehouse defensive lineman
Demetrice Lofton (Fairburn, Ga.) strip sacked Smith and defensive tackle
Marquis Deweert (Bellevue, Wa.) recovered the ball at Miles College's 19-yard line.
Just when it looked like the Maroon Tigers were on the verge of scoring their first points of the game, running back
Santo Dunn (Miami, Fla.) fumbled at Miles College's 4-yard line as Golden Bear's defensive lineman Kadarius Roberts forced the fumble and defensive back Terry Beckham recovered it stalling the MHC drive.

Dedrick Vanover (Gainesville, Fla.) intercepted Smith on the ensuing drive but Morehouse quarterback
Michael Sims (Detroit, Mich.) was intercepted by defensive back Jarius Shade. The Maroon Tiger's forced another turnover when defensive back Dainel Norman (Oakland, Ca.) striped running back Donte Edwards and linebacker
Jonathan Mathis (Stone Mountain, Ga.) recovered the ball to end the quarter..
In the second quarter, Maroon Tiger's quarterback
Jalen Brown (Stamford, Ct.) underthrew receiver
Tremell Gooden (Fairburn, Ga.) on a 4
th and 4 on Miles College's 31-yard line stalling a drive. On the shortened field, Golden Bear's running back Wade Streeter took off on a 36-yard run to get the MC offense all the way to Morehouse's 1-yard line. Quarterback Li' Jon Cordier rushed for a 1-yard touchdown to increase the Golden Bear's lead to 21-0.
Morehouse's next drive ended after three plays for minus 15 yards. Miles College running back Wade Streeter had 44 yards rushing on the next drive. He capped off the drive with a 20-yard touchdown. The Golden Bears took a whopping 28-0 lead into halftime.
The Maroon Tigers struggled to pick up a first down in the beginning of the second half as Brown underthrew wide receiver
Trevor Gichaba (Concord, N.C.) on 3
rd and 4 giving the ball back to MC. Smith and Streeter led the Golden Bears on a lengthy 10 play, 71-yard drive as Streeter capped the drive with a 35-yard rushing touchdown run to give Miles College an insurmountable 35-0 lead.
After Vanover's second interception, Morehouse scored their first touchdown at with 1:39 left in the third quarter when Brown threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver
Albert Connell (Houston, Tex.) to cut the Golden Bears lead to 38-7. The touchdown was set up by a 38-yard wide open pass to Gooden.
Despite the massive deficit, Morehouse head coach
Rich Freeman left his offensive starters in the game to start the fourth quarter. Dunn's 22-yard reception from Brown helped set up a 1-yard touchdown reception to Gooden. This score trimmed the deficit to 38-14. The Golden Bear's defense didn't let up late, as linebacker N'Ktavious Floyd intercepted Brown and returned the it for a 53-yard touchdown to increase the lead to 45-14. With 3:05 left in the fourth quarter, Brown threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Gooden in the back of the endzone for the final score of the night.
Offensively, Morehouse was led by Brown who had 255 passing yards and three touchdowns. The rushing game struggled tonight, as Dunn led the Maroon Tigers with 11 yards rushing.
Defensively, Mathis led the team with 15 tackles. Defensive back
Dadrian Lyman (Sandersville, Ga.) and
Edward Nelson (Chester, Pa.) each had eight tackles. Vanover had two interceptions and Deweert had recovered a fumble.
The Maroon Tigers will have a week off to rest and recover before they take on the Savanah State University Tigers in their home opener at B.T. Harvey Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on Saturday, September 28
th. Kickoff is set for 2 P.M.
