Last Meeting (2018): Morehouse defeated Benedict, 14-10 (
BOXSCORE)
ATLANTA, GA - On October 19
th, the Maroon Tigers (2-5, 0-3 SIAC) lost their second game in a row to Fort Valley State. This week, the Maroon Tigers have a chance to end their losing streak at home against Benedict College.
Fort Valley got off to a strong start offensively, leaping out to a 20-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. On a 3
rd and 9 from Morehouse's 47-yard line, quarterback Slade Jarman threw a 47-yard bomb to receiver Jeffery Mack for the team's first touchdown. Jarman threw an incomplete pass on a two-point conversion, which kept the Wildcats' lead at 6-0. Morehouse didn't pick up a first down on their next offensive possession.
After failing to get any points, the Wildcats got the ball back. Penalties by Morehouse's defense helped Fort Valley's offense advance the ball down the down field. The Maroon Tigers' defense was called for an offsides penalty on a 2
nd and 8 that gave the Wildcats 5 yards. Later in the drive, a pass interference penalty was called on Morehouse defensive back Dainel Norman (Oakland, CA). This play gave the Wildcats 15 yards and put the ball at Morehouse's 34-yard-line. Jarman threw a 28-yard pass to receiver Shemar Bridges on a 2
nd and 13 to put the Wildcats at Morehouse's 9-yard-line. On first down, Jarman threw his second touchdown of the game to receiver Griffin Watley to increase Fort Valley's lead to13-0.
A fumble by Morehouse linebacker
Bertram Johnson (Detroit, MI) on the return team gave the Wildcats great field position. Jarman led Fort Valley's offense on a 5-play, 34-yard drive that was capped off with a 13-yard rushing touchdown by running back Jamari Clark, pushing the Wildcat's lead to 20-0.
Morehouse's offense kicked a couple of field goals in the second quarter to decrease the deficit to 23-6, but these were the only points the offense scored in the entire game. Johnson returned a blocked punt for a touchdown and Cartell Strong (Zephyrhills, FL) returned an interception for a touchdown, giving the Maroon Tigers 21 points total. But in the end, Morehouse's struggling offense wasn't good enough to overcome the early deficit, as the Wildcats ran away with a 37-21 victory in the second half.
Luckily for Morehouse, they will face a struggling Benedict Tigers (0-6, 0-3 SIAC) team who has yet to win a game this season. Last week, the Tigers lost a close 7-2 game to Albany State University.
The Tigers defense played lights out in the second, third and fourth quarters. But they allowed an 80-yard touchdown run by running back McKinley Habersham in the first quarter that gave the golden rams a 7-0 lead. The defense was able to force a safety, but these points were not enough to overcome the offense's struggles in the muddy terrain.
Offensively, the Tigers were led by running back Raheem Jennings, who had 46 yards rushing. Wide receiver Drelon Freeman added another 36 yards rushing.
Defensively, both defensive linemen Collins Tensely and Joshua Siaosi had eight tackles. Defensive lineman Gerald Smith had a forced fumble.
