Alston Comes Up Just Short Of Triple-Double as #18 Morehouse College Beats Carver, 85-44

ATLANTA, GA - Senior forward Omar Alston came up two assist shy of a triple-double as #18 Morehouse College beat Carver College in the last game of the Arthur J. McAfee, Jr. Memorial Classic, winning in convincing fashion (85-44) ending the weekend undefeated (2-0).

The Maroon Tigers improve to 7-1 on the season, while the Cougars fall to 0-16.   

Morehouse led the entire first half, heading into the locker room with a 21 point lead 36-15. As a result of an effective full-court press, MHC was able to hold the Cougars to 22.2% shooting from the field, along with an abysmal 9.1 % from behind the arc. The Maroon Tigers also won the rebounding battle, out rebounding the Cougars 28-17 in the first half.

Morehouse College also would benefit from a strong first half from their senior forward Omar Alston (Waldorf, MD) who led the way with eight points along with eight rebounds.

The Maroon Tigers came out of the locker room to start the second half with the same defensive intensity, as a result Morehouse would end the game winning the turnover battle 28-16.

As a product of their tenacious full-court defense, Morehouse was able to limit the Cougars to 23.7% shooting from the field, along with 12.5% from three on the night.  

The Maroon Tigers would also reign supreme the paint, ending the night with 42 points inside the paint; MHC shot 45.3% from the field, in conjunction with 23.1% from behind the three-point line. The Maroon Tigers also received a big boost from their bench who outscored the Cougar bench 45-23.  

Alston a Waldorf, Maryland product would finish with a game-high 17 points, 10 rebounds, to go along with eight assist. Senior guard Michael Olmert (Atlanta, GA) again had a stellar night facilitating the ball as he finished with seven points and eight assist. Freshman guard Malik Kennedy (Toronto, ON) would also chip in with 10 points of his own coming off the bench while freshman center Olisa Akonobi (Abuja, Nigeria) had five points, five rebounds and a game-high five blocks in only nine minutes of play.

Carver was led by Rayford Washington who led the way with 13 points.

The Maroon Tigers will return to action Saturday, Dec.15 as they travel to Frankfort, KY to take on the Thorobreds of  Kentucky State University. Tip-Off is set for 3 p.m.
