ATLANTA, GA - Morehouse College is no longer undefeated as Albany State handed the Maroon Tigers their first loss of the season, 41-19, on Sunday afternoon at B.T. Harvey stadium in Atlanta, Ga.
Morehouse falls to 6-1, 2-1 SIAC, while the Golden Rams improves to 4-3, 3-0 SIAC.
The game was originally scheduled for Saturday, but due to the damage caused by Hurricane Michael in the Albany area, both institutions agreed to play a Sunday afternoon game.
ASU jumped on the Maroon Tigers early and never trailed. Albany State opened up the scoring when Gabriel Ballinas kicked a 47-yard field goal in the first quarter giving the Golden Rams an early 3-0 lead. Albany State would take a 10-0 lead when Kelias Williams scored on a 20-yard run.
Morehouse got on the board in the second quarter when
Michael Sims (Detroit, MI) connected with senior
Amyr Smith (Atlanta, GA) on a 23 yard pass cutting the ASU lead to 10-7. It didn't take Albany State long to respond as they drove the ball 89-yards on eight plays capped by a 38-yard TD catch by Mike Green from Williams giving the Golden Rams a 17-7 lead at the half.
The third quarter was all Albany as they put up 21 points. Morehouse only managed to score on another TD reception from Smith making the score 38-13 after three.
ASU added to the lead as Ballinas hit on a 43-yard field goal extending the lead to 41-13. The Maroon Tigers added a late touchdown when Sims found
Tremell Gooden on a 22-yard TD strike for the final 41-19 score.
Smith led MHC with six receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns while Sims finished the day completing only 16-of-33 passes for 184 yards and three TD passes.
Senior
Antonio Johnson (Birmingham, AL) led the defense again as he finished with nine tackles and two tackles for loss while junior
Edward Nelson (Chester, PA) had eight tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery on the day. Senior
Treyvon Luckey (Shreveport, LA) had seven tackles, one sack and two tackles for loss.
Albany State held Morehouse to just 218 offensive yards with a 218-to-34 advantage on the ground. The Golden Rams also held a 37:56-to-22:04 advantage on time of possession.
The Maroon Tigers will travel up I-20 next weekend as they visit the Tigers of Benedict College next Saturday, Oct. 20 in Columbia, S.C. Kick-Off is set for 2 p.m.
