November 21, 2017 – ATLANTA—Omar Alston poured in 18 points and led Morehouse to a 91-86 win over the previously unbeaten University of West Georgia Wolves.
Alston hit 8 of 11 shots and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, as the Maroon Tigers extend their win streak to 5-0.
The home opening win came on the day when the newly-refurbished arena floor was dedicated in honor of Arthur J. McAfee Jr., the winningest basketball coach in Morehouse history. More than 100 of McAfee's family members and former players attended the moving pre-game ceremony.
Two three pointers by Duby Maduegbunam, with assists by Michael Olmert, put Morehouse ahead, at the 14-minute mark of the first half, and the Maroon Tigers maintained the lead the rest of the way.
The Maroon Tigers built the lead to 44-36 at the half and led by as many as 14 points in the second half. The Wolves continued to battle and closed the four points late in the half, but four straight free throws by Maduegbunam and Jordan Wallace preserved the lead and the win.
Three other Maroon Tigers posted double figures. Maduegbunam had 15, Tyrius Walker put up 14 and Martravious Little added 10 points.
Marquill Smith led the way for West Georgia, with game-highs in points, 22, and rebounds, 13. Greg James and William Sides chipped in 18 points each, as the Wolves fell to 3-1.
Morehouse will travel to Tuskegee, to play the Golden Tigers, Saturday, then take on Miles, in Birmingham, Monday, before returning home, to face the Paine College Lions, December 3, at 3 p.m.
