Maroon Tigers Overcome By Wolves

November 11, 2011 -- ATLANTA -- The Maroon Tigers surrendered a 10-point second-half lead and fell to the University of West Georgia Wolves, 50-49.

After two exhibition blowouts by Division I teams, Morehouse got to play someone its own size. However the result was the same, though by a smaller margin.

In the season opener for both teams, Morehouse led most of the way. A 23-21 half-time lead became a 45-35 lead, with nine minutes left, but the shooting and ball security went south and the Tigers were outscored 15-4 down the stretch.

Daniyal Faquir, last year's scoring leader and preseason All-SIAC First Teamer, led Morehouse in scoring with 14 points, on 5-of-17 shooting. He scored 11 of his points in the second half.

Shawn Allen hauled in a team-high eight rebounds, to go with seven points and two steals.

Adam Callaway had a solid game, hitting 3-of-5 shots, for eight points, and hauling in six rebounds.

Playing mostly with his back to the basket, Andrae Nelson hit three turnaround jumpers in the lane, for six points. He blocked three shots and grabbed five rebounds, before fouling out with four minutes left.  

Jonathan Tassin hit 4-of-8 shots, for eight points, and pulled down five defensive rebounds.

Gavin Field (15 pts.) and Da'Ron Sims (11 pts.) led the Wolves who compete in the Gulf South Conference.

In the opener of the two-day, four-team Morehouse Classic, Clark Atlanta fell to North Alabama, 76-73, in overtime.

On Saturday, the teams switch dance partners. CAU will play West Georgia, in the 6 p.m. game, and Morehouse takes on North Alabama, at 8.
