Basketball Season Begins Today

November 11, 2011 -- ATLANTA -- The Maroon Tigers will tip off the 2011-12 season today, with the Morehouse Classic, a two-day doubleheader, featuring Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, the University of North Alabama and the University of West Georgia.

The games are free and open to the public.

In the first game, at 6 p.m., the Clark Atlanta Panthers will tangle with the North Alabama Lions.

In the second game, at 8 p.m., Morehouse takes the floor against the West Georgia Wolves.

On Saturday, the teams will switch opponents. Clark Atlanta will play West Georgia, at 6 p.m. Morehouse will play North Alabama, at 8 p.m.

Two Morehouse players were voted to the preseason All-SIAC team.

 Junior Daniyal Faquir was named to the First Team and senior Jonathan Tassin was selected to the Second Team, by the SIAC Basketball Coaches Committee.

Faquir, who transferred to Morehouse from Pasadena City College, led Morehouse in scoring last season, with 14.9 ppg. He led the SIAC in three-point shooting, hitting 52-of-102 shots from beyond the arc.

Tassin, a transfer from Seward C.C., started 17 games and averaged 8.4 points and 3.6 rebounds.

The SIAC coaches projected that Morehouse would finish fifth, in the 13-team conference. Morehouse finished last season at 14-14.
